Coffee Date {#17}

Happy weekend everyone!

If we were having coffee today I’d tell you all about our trip to California. Though we’d be having coffee on the beach because we’re still here!

Though if we were having coffee, I’d be honest and tell you that I’m really looking forward to going home tomorrow. I’m convinced that the term “family vacation” is an oxymoron with kids this age. Well, actually vacation with J and N would be fine — no diapers, no naps, etc. But when your family includes an 8-month-old baby who’s still breastfeeding, doesn’t sleep through the night at home, and DEFINITELY doesn’t sleep through the night when sleeping in a pack-n-play, it’s a recipe for Mama labor camp more than vacation. I’ll be ready to get home.

This is the best way to get Baby J to nap, and he takes catnaps at best:

We arrived last weekend and spent a few days visiting with Albert’s family in the LA area. I had one wish for our LA trip — a visit to the Garment District! I got my wish, though my visit there was short. We only had a couple of hours, which allowed me to hit up Michael Levine and the Michael Levine loft. I would have loved to spend a day or two down there, but considering the vast amount of fabric I left those places with, it’s probably best that I didn’t this time. I’m already planning my girls’ weekend with my sewing gals for the fall — an LA visit dedicated to fabric shopping!

Then we headed down the coast to Encinitas, CA and a beach house! We have a good friend from college getting married here tonight, and J and N are both in the wedding. I made their wedding outfits, but sadly did not have time to finish my own dress with all the packing craziness in the few days before we left. Oh well, I’ll finish it for a date night next month.

Encinitas is beautiful and perfect for families with young kids. We’re just a couple of blocks away from Moonlight Beach, which is super kid-friendly. The kids are loving the beach — N loves the sand, and J loves the ocean!

But tomorrow we take our show on the road again — this time home to Kansas. Let me tell you, I will welcome the good night’s sleep!

If we were having coffee, what would you tell me?

    I totally know what you mean about vacations, it’s definitely easier now that my girls are a bit older. And also after I told my husband “I’m not the nanny!” He used to be the only one having fun, but now it’s more equal. My in-laws have a house in LA so we go there from time to time…next time I am going to Michael Levine, it looks awesome 🙂

      You should definitely hit Michael Levine — it’s amazing.

      Albert is pretty good about manning the kids generally, including on vacation. The main challenge right now is that I’m still breastfeeding, so I’m pretty much tethered to the baby. And he’s just hit his Mommy-Mommy-Mommy phase, so he gets really fussy if I’m not holding him. It was nice to get home. And the kids are finally getting adjusted back to central time, so hopefully we’ll all be back to to normal by the weekend!

    I hear ya on that vacation bit. Ollie has to be rocked to sleep and his naps are all over the place. Puts a damper when all you want to do is get out and see things. Looking forward to when he’s a little older and will actually enjoy visiting new places.

    Hope you had a great time at the wedding. Safe travels!

      Thanks, we did have a good time! I’m also looking forward to when Baby J is older and vacations can be fun and relaxing again! J and N are both old enough now that we can do stuff — both are potty-trained, no naps, etc. Makes it much easier when you don’t have to plan a day around sporadic naps!
