Itch to Stitch released the Bellavista Top (affiliate link) a couple of weeks ago, and I tested it way back in December! I was in a major sewing slump for most of the fall of 2017, and testing a couple of items was a good way to force myself back into my sewing room.
And I have a great work top to show for it! I had been wanting a big, oversized cowl like this for a while, and this top fit the bill perfectly.
The Bellavista has a basic swing shape — it’s really the collar that sets this pattern apart. The front is constructed from 3 pieces, which gives some nice colorblocking opportunities if that’s your thing. In addition to the cowl, the pattern has an option for a basic crew neck. I admit that the crew neck doesn’t really appeal to me, but it could be a nice swing option.
The cowl, however, is pretty much the perfect large cowl. As soon as I saw it, I immediately had thoughts of transferring it on to all my winter tops!
This top is well-drafted, like every Itch to Stitch pattern I’ve ever worked with. The instructions are great, the illustrations clear, and it all went together without a hitch, even in testing.

Techniques Required: Sewing with knits, attaching a neckband (optional), knit fitting, setting in a sleeve, hemming knits.
- 2 necklines — Cowl and crew neck
- 2 sleeve options (long and bell sleeves)
- Optional color blocking
- Knit fabric
- Matching thread
Fabric: Double knit from Cali Fabrics. I purchased this ages ago, so I highly doubt its available anymore.
Fit: Excellent. The more I work with Itch to Stitch patterns, the more I like them.
Pattern format: PDF. Overall, Itch to Stitch PDF patterns are pretty easy to work with. And Kennis has a tutorial for assembling them that makes it pretty painless.
- Amazing cowl. I love the shape and size of this cowl.
- Nice swingy shape.
- Great drafting and instructions, as I have come to expect from Itch to Stitch patterns.
- Center front seams give a nice colorblocking option, if that’s your thing.
- Personally I don’t care for the crew neck — I think it’s too high to be particularly flattering. But that is a personal nitpick, and it’s the most I could come up with.
Overall Grade: B+. This is my perfect cowl. I love the overall size and shape of it. I’ve been wanting an oversized cowl, and this fits the bill perfectly.
