Another great new pattern released from Love Notions today, and I got to be a tester 🙂
** Disclaimer: I am one of Love Notions’ paid testers, meaning that I get a small stipend for my efforts in testing and posting about the pattern. I am also a Love Notions affiliate, so if you click through any of the links in this post and buy something, Tami will send a dollar or so my way 🙂 This blogging habit of mine gets pricey with very little remuneration, so I do appreciate every little bit!
The Tidal Tank and Dress (affiliate link) is a quick and easy knit dress. The last few LN releases have required a little more fitting than a basic knit and have also ventured into the world of wovens. While I have loved that, it is nice to have a quick, easy project sometimes, and Love Notions afficionados may appreciate a return to the quick knits.
But on to the Tidal details! This is a knit tank or dress that can be made as a shirt, knee-length dress or maxi dress. There are options for sleeves, sleeveless and tank straps with either bands or bindings. The main feature is the princess seams running down the front of the dress. Those seams are idea for color blocking, and are very slimming.
Both dress views are drafted with a center back seam for shaping, which makes it really easy to adjust for a swayback or a sassy booty. The tank has the option for the back piece to be cut on the fold or with a back seam. The back seam on the tank is great if you’re using something like a cotton lycra blend that doesn’t have a lot of drape.
For this maxi, I chose to use the same fabric for the entire dress, a lovely bamboo/spandex blend from Fabric.com. It’s really soft and drapes beautifully. I lost a LOT of length in the wash, though, so that’s something to be aware of. The fabric estimates in the pattern don’t account for much shrinkage, so you need to consider that when ordering fabric. Had I known that, I would have ordered 2.5 yards of this fabric, rather than 2.
I used bands to finish the neckline and sleeves, and shortened the dress by about 3 inches. That was a necessity since I didn’t have enough fabric to fit the whole pattern pieces on my cut, but it turned out ok. The dress is still plenty long for me, so know that the maxi dress is pretty long!
This is such a quick sew that I definitely plan to bust out a few more. I have some bamboo spandex stripes for an awesome tank, and some more tie-dyed bamboo spandex for another maxi. I also have a couple of tanks that I will be blogging later this week!
Pattern: Tidal Tank & Dress (affiliate link) by Love Notions
Size: S blended to a M at the hip
Difficulty: Knit beginner.
Techniques Required: Sewing with knits, hemming knits, attaching bands, doing an FBA (if necessary), blending sizes (if necessary).
Fabric: Bamboo/spandex blend from Fabric.com.
Fit: Great. The fit on this is spot on and it is so comfy to wear. It also makes quite a statement with the length and the seaming. I did an FBA to add 1″ to the bust and I blended to a M at the hip.
Modifications: Only size adjustments as mentioned previously.
Pattern format: PDF.
- Quick, easy sew.
- The princess seams take it up a notch beyond a basic tank dress and give it a beautiful shape.
- All the seams make for easy adjustments.
- Lots of options included.
- Colorblocking on the front piece gives a great slimming effect.
- The FBA on this pattern can be a little touchy because of the way the back piece is drafted. The princess seams are in front only, and the side piece needs to be altered for an FBA.
- The maxi runs pretty long. Be aware of that and shorten if necessary.
Overall Grade: B+. Cute and quick dress with some extra features that give it a bit of a “wow” factor.
