Welcome EYMM lovers!  Today is my stop on the EYMM Capsule Skirt tour.  And for once I’m making something for one of my kids rather than for myself.

When the opportunity arose to participate in this tour, I jumped on it because … Well, N really needs some new skirts!  The girl grew like a weed over the winter and her legs are now a mile long.  Which means that all the cute little skirts that she wore last summer are now indecently short on her.  She still wears them (because all of her growth was up, not out), but she really shouldn’t.

The EYMM Girls Capsule Skirt was a great solution to our problem!  This is a quick, easy, basic little skirt that is perfect for little girls who like a little swing in their step.

The length on this was perfect for N and since even I can sew it up in about 45 minutes (pockets and shorties included) it will easily solve our summer skirt woes!

N’s favorite thing about this skirt is easily the pockets.  The pattern is drafted with a separate pocket piece, but since I have an irrational loathing of sewing on separate in-seam pocket pieces, I just cut the skirt and pocket in one big piece.  So basically, I lined up the pocket piece where it should be on the skirt, overlapping the seam allowances, cut half of the skirt, moved the pocket piece over to the other side, and then cut the other half.

And a great bonus is that this skirt combines perfectly with EYMM’s Jocelyn Leggings for a skort!  N’s school requires that all the little girls wear shorts under their skirt (understandable since I wouldn’t want to look at panties all day long either), and having the shorts incorporated into the skirt makes it so much easier.

I made N a size 4, even though she is almost 5.  She’s a skinny minny, and her measurements actually would put her in a smaller size.  This skirt rides a little low after she’s been wearing it for a few hours, but it stays up and she’ll have plenty of room to grow.

The fabric is the remains of a floral print that I got from Girl Charlee and used for a dress for myself ages ago.  The floral wasn’t quite stretchy enough for the waistband, so I used a soft, stretchy bamboo/spandex jersey for that part.  In all, I easily used under a yard for this skirt, shorties included.

As soon as N saw this shirt, she promptly stripped so that she could put it on, and then requested that I make her another in navy blue.  Yes, ma’am!  I call that a win!

  1. Your daughter is adorable! We made ours a skort too. It is just too functional and just makes sense for the little ones!!!!!

  2. This is such a practical and cute skort! I’m not sure that I understand exactly how you’ve cut the pocket out in one piece with the skirt. Perhaps you could do a photo tutorial some time of how you did this?

    1. I could do that! The only pattern I’ve ever seen drafted with an integrated pocket piece is the Made by Rae Washi dress. It was such an easy way to do an inseam pocket that I try to replicate it whenever I can!
