Lately I keep seeing posts by sewists lamenting that they’ve made these awesome Mabel skirts that they rarely wear because they don’t know what to wear them with. This puzzles me because my Mabel skirts are undoubtedly my most-worn handmade garments. To date, I’ve made 6 of them — 3 minis and 3 pencils — with 3 more pencil versions cut and at some stage of the sewing process.
So since I’d consider myself something of a Mabel expert by now, here my top 5 favorite ways to style my Mabel skirts, both for the office and for casual wear. One quick side note: You’ll see that I rarely tuck my shirts in to my Mabel skirts. I happen to prefer my shirts untucked (tucking in shirts just makes me feel all buttoned-up and stuffy), which may be why I have no problems with styling these skirts while others do.
1. The hip-length sweater/sweatshirt:
My current favorite style, particularly since the weather is now cold, and it works both for the office and for weekend.
2. The graphic tee:
I did a half-tuck with my t-shirt and then pair it with an open sweater or cardigan (to go super-cas). A blazer would dress it up a little.
3. The loose, flowy blouse:
Probably my favorite way to wear my Mabels during the summer. This outfit is definitely secret pajamas.

4. The fitted t-shirt and cardigan/blazer:
Another very frequent office style for me. This has all the elements of the typical law-office female attire (pencil skirt, shell, cardigan/blazer), but is 100% knit so it’s waaaaaay more comfy!
5. The fitted t-shirt/bodysuit:
Finally, why not take Mabel out on the town for date night or girls’ night out? She cleans up good!
