Coffee Date Friday

Coffee Date Friday {#6}

Hey everyone!

If we were having coffee this morning, we probably would have slipped and slided our way to the coffee shop because we have 12 inches of snow on the ground here in Kansas City!  The nasty snowstorm that has been gradually moving east hit us hard on Tuesday.  Naturally, that was the day I was scheduled to mediate a case downtown.  I would gladly have rescheduled the mediation, but all the other lawyers on the case were old school litigators who refused to be daunted by a little snow.  So instead of spending the day snuggled up with my littles in front of a roaring fire, I spent it holed up in a closed downtown law office negotiating.  But we did settle so at least the day wasn’t wasted.

If we were having coffee, I would tell you that J and N have been incredibly clingy lately.  I really hope this is a short-lived phase.  The boy who could barely be bothered to say goodbye to me when I dropped him off at school has started clinging to me when I drop him off.  He wants hug after hug and kiss after kiss and then cries when I leave.  It’s not because he doesn’t want to stay at school — he loves school — he says it’s because he misses his mommy and daddy.  Nothing has really changed at home (other than me going back to work a couple of months ago), so I’m not really sure what precipitated this.  Yeah, spring really needs to come.

If we were at coffee, I’d tell you that Baby J is now officially 5 months old!  I managed to take some pictures of him last weekend when N was napping and J was off running errands with Albert.  If you fancy a gander, you can check them out here.

If we were having coffee, I’d tell you that I’ve been having fun planning and scheming for a sewing weekend with a girlfriend who wants to learn.  She’s coming for a few days later this month and I’m going to start teaching her the basics of apparel sewing.  I really love teaching and mentoring, particularly something I enjoy as much as sewing, so this is right up my alley.  Add on the opportunity for good conversation with a good friend over good wine, and I’m sold!

If we were having coffee, what would you tell me?

  1. 12 inches of snow?! Crazy! I hope it’s not coming this way…we’ve just had really cold temperatures and not too much snow. Aww, Baby J is adorable! I love his smile – he seems like a very happy baby. What will you be making with your friend? I have a friend who wishes she could sew and I want to teach her, but I don’t want to scare her away either!
If we were at coffee, I would tell you that I’m super excited it is the weekend. It’s been a long week of school and later today I get to see a friend I haven’t seen in over a year!

    1. I hope this storm passes you by! The cold sucks but I really hate the icy slick roads we get after a big snow. I am so over winter.

My friend and I have been exchanging lots of pattern ideas, and with her I think we’ll probably start with one of my Japanese pattern books. She loves the Japanese aesthetic and the loose babydoll dresses, which have the added bonus of being very easy to construct with simple shapes. One of my first projects was Made by Rae’s Lickety Split Bag, and I still think that would make a great first sewing project. A scarf would be a great first project too or a basic home dec project like a pillow cover. Not particularly exciting but it would teach your friend the basics and help her build some confidence. And if there is a baby girl to sew for, my very first apparel item I sewed was the Made by Petchy Baby Dress (http://madebypetchy.blogspot.com/2008/06/free-pattern-baby-dresstunic.html). It was a great one to start with!

  2. What a gorgeous little man! I’d be telling you that, despite all the bad weather over here; we seem to be in a hole in the middle of it and we’re missing it all (so far!). I’d be telling you that, despite waiting for the Ofsted phone call to inform us of our school inspection, this week was a productive one and I feel like I’ve got lots done. I’d also be telling you that I’ve got one week left at work before we get a week off and I get to spend the week with my gorgeous little man!

  3. Sorry to hear about all the snow. Snow is so pretty when it falls. But it overstays its welcome. Becomes dirty, annoying and not nice to be around.

It’s finally raining over here and I am breathing a sigh of relief. But sadly the rain makes me want to become a hermit and not venture anywhere.

Your sewing date sounds fabulous! I have yet to meet up with anyone to sew or just talk shop. One day…

    1. I’m so glad you’re getting some rain! Hopefully this snow will leave us very soon — our temps are supposed to warm up this week and it should be in the 50s this weekend.

I’m so looking forward to my sewing date! I only wish that my friend lived closer so we could do it more often — she’s coming down from the Twin Cities.

  4. I didn’t realize you are in Kansas City! Such a pretty town! (I lived in St. Louis for almost 20 years before I moved to Chicago.)

Such sweet pictures of the little one – what a great smile he has!

And your sewing weekend sounds so fun! I’ve been wanting to do a similar thing with my BFF, but she has a hard time getting away since she has a very elderly Great Dane who needs constant care. Someday . . .
